Fairy tales are real

Writing based on Australian folklore

By In Competitions, Thoughts 1 min

So this writer-friend-type has been nagging me to join her competition, writing an “unexpected fairy tale”. I thought, yeah why not, it’s only 350 words. How hard could it be?

So, so hard.

I had a glance at the other entrants – they were all so darn good! Some had put a twist on an old favourite; some had tried something completely new. I toyed with the idea of making Red Riding Hood’s grandma be into bondage, or having Cinderella shopping at Westfield for a prince-grabbing shoe… but then I remembered something I’d been wanting to use as inspiration for a while. I remembered a news story about the folk magic of early settlers in Australia, something that we’re only really just finding out about now. And I thought, that’ll be it.

The result is Colonists, which you can read here.

I’d like to delve further into this world at some point – maybe less of the goblins, but more of the people and what drove them to it. Maybe that’s a novel in waiting. But now, I put my chances in the hands of the goblin king. And Susi and Anna…
